Considerations for AI Use

To begin to achieve the positive effects of generative AI (where AI itself is an appropriate option), organizations should take a functionally-oriented, use-case discovery approach. In this document, I consider these four questions as a starting point to help guide stakeholders trying to define their AI use-case’s needs and the right approach:

  • What does the use-case need AI to do?
  • What data does the use-case require?
  • Which solution type fits the use-case?
  • How much autonomy should the AI processes have?

Campus units and their staff will be best positioned to realize gains from AI if they develop literacy and competency by maintaining an up-to-date understanding of where and how AI can be useful or effective (along with a general understanding of the caveats and risks). An important part of AI literacy is learning which AI options are best suited to which uses (and when to evaluate and safely procure new tools – and when to hold off.) Factoring in recommendations such as the UC AI Guiding Principles along the way ensures solutions minimizing harm.
