Cloud Meetup Entry

These are entries for upcoming and past UC Berkeley Cloud Meetups

UC Berkeley Cloud Meetup 032: LBL Advanced Light Source + Google Cloud Platform (03/31/2022)

This month the Cloud Meetup will host a presentation by Dr. Scott Classen (Scott is a Biophysicist Research Scientist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab) who supports the Advanced Light Source. The meetup will cover his use of GCP for the Advanced Light Source.

UC Berkeley Cloud Meetup 031: COVID-19 research using data science & Azure (01/27/2022)

Using data science and the cloud to better understand coronaviruses and COVID-19 This month's meetup showcases two UC Berkeley research groups’ use of Azure cloud services to meet research challenges of their award as part of the C3.ai Digital Transformation Institute’s Mitigation of COVID-19 and Future Pandemics call for proposals. In one case a researcher “took ownership” of the group’s cloud deployment, and in another case Institute staff deployed cloud infrastructure behind “one-button access” for researchers.

UC Berkeley Cloud Meetup 030: Berkeley Startups and the Cloud (12/09/2021)

This month's meetup focuses on Cloud Meetup partner Berkeley SkyDeck and explores why startups are important to Berkeley, how startups should think about selecting their cloud based tech stacks, and features a lightning talk from Mithril, a current cohort company from Berkeley SkyDeck, on how they enable secure AI on Azure.

UC Berkeley Cloud Meetup 029: AWS and the RiseLab (10/28/2021)

This month's meetup is the first in a series of vendor showcase meetups in which the UC Berkeley Cloud Computing Meetup asks for the vendor to provide research oriented applications of their cloud stacks. Cloud computing is not only transforming IT but also but it fundamentally changing the way we do research in computer science and machine learning. Over the past decade, the RAD Lab, AMP Lab, and now RISE Lab have produced research and software artifacts that have literally helped define the modern cloud and the software systems that run on it.

Cloud Meetup 028: Secure Research Data + Compute (09/30/2021)

No researcher wants to wake up to a headline screaming that their research has leaked human subject data onto the Darkweb. But it's not always clear to people how to protect their key research data, and there is much pressing work to do beyond security. Ever since privacy and protection of computational data has emerged as a significant service area of focus in research computing this has been a pain point. At UC Berkeley, we’ve developed a secure service targeted to serve those working with sensitive information across the breadth of the research community — from Social Welfare to Genomics,...

Cloud Meetup 027: Pacific Research Platform (08/26/2021)

This month's Cloud Meetup will focus on the Pacific Research Platform. Launched in 2015 with a grant from the National Science Foundation, the Pacific Research Platform sought to build a high-speed broadband freeway for research in a variety of data-intensive scientific disciplines. The PRP enhanced network visualization and accelerated discovery in archaeology, particle physics, astronomy, and life sciences over a network of more than 50 institutions. At the same time, it offered learning opportunities to students at partner universities, including Historically Black Colleges &...

Cloud Meetup 026: Storage in the Cloud @ Berkeley (07/29/2021)

This month's Cloud Meetup will focus on storage in the cloud a hot topic at a time in which Berkeley is multi-cloud and oriented towards hybrid solutions that follow our "University First" cloud strategy. The discussion is open to everyone and especially geared towards UC Berkeley's Cloud Community of Practice. This open discussion on cloud storage at Berkeley moderated by Amy Neeser and Bill Allison will deep dive into UC Berkeley’s cloud storage options and their different use-cases with experts on-hand from IT to address current options, plans and example use-cases. We will start the...

Cloud Meetup 025: Cloud at the School of Information (06/24/2021)

This month we will focus on the cloud at the UC Berkeley School of Information. Kyle and Luis will present about their current work and research using cloud technologies as well as the many cloud computing efforts at the UC Berkeley School of Information. They work together on Berkeley's 261-Machine Learning at Scale course.

Cloud Meetup 024: Michigan Medicine's GCP App Strategy (05/27/2021)

Shanelle Boluyt (Project Manager) and John Walsh (DevOps Lead) from Michigan Medicine's DevOps Team | HITS Academic IT will present on how they improved Michigan Medicine’s ability to develop, deploy, and manage custom and vendor applications in an efficient, secure and reliable way. They will share how Michigan Medicine takes advantage of infrastructure as code tooling, Cloud APIs, and shifting left to include more compensating controls for security and compliance into the system. By providing pre-configured environments, they can take on a larger portion of the shared responsibility model,...
